Free Advice

Don’t be in a big hurry to find one contractor! Talk to several and ask a lot of questions. Ask for references! If there is a big difference in quotes, call more contractors. If you’re buying a home that needs a specialist to review something and you can’t find someone fast, talk to your attorney and real estate agent. They can buy you more time.

Also, a general contractor can in many cases provide a host of services.

Remember the big Home Improvement stores in Iowa offer may services and can provide contractors for just about anything you could need. Local hardware stores are a great place to get names.

Last…..NEVER, NEVER, NEVER pay up front for a repair!!!!! It is common for a contractor to ask for money up front for materials. Have a contract. You can get them at Staples or have an attorney write one for you. It could save you lots of money. Have a schedule of payments in place before they start. NEVER pay out before that scheduled payment. If the contractor is not willing to work your way, find a new contractor!

Lots of guys work for cash…..get a receipt with there name and address.
